The Four Muskateers

The 24th of April was “deportation day ” in Plestin  its the day of rememberance for those who died in the WW2 either shot or sent to the concentration camps. My nearest neighbour’s mother died in Ravenbrock 1944 for sheltering 2 pilots who crash landed on the beach at ST Efflem, they stayed in the local château for a week and then were passed along the resistance escape network but the gestapo found out and took her away the 10 children were hurriedly hidden, the eldest 18yrs went to England and the second oldest 17yrs hid out in one of our barns ( which is now a gite les Etables )  and became the local resistance communication expert using morse code. The farmer at Coat Aillis during the war was a communist leader of the local resistance farming during the  day time and blowing things up at night.

So on Sunday there was the usual ceremony a march up the hill and the remmants of the Plestin fanfare played the usual numbers, la Marseillaise ,Chant des Partisans and Chant Marais. Unfortunately a lot of the players are away so there was only me on barisax, Rodger on tenor, Guy on bass drum and Fabienne on trumpet and she had an abcess and was on antibiotics so it didn’t look too good but when we played it sounded OK as the Mayor said at least it was the best players who turned up.

Plestin first team had an interesting match last week one of the opposition was red carded  and instead of wandering off he attacked the ref physically knocking him to the ground ( they had to call for an ambulance )  so I think he will be getting a life ban and the club a massive fine.

The gendarmes come calling

Last week I was just checking my emails and glanced to the left and saw a blue car pull in with two gendarmes. This is interesting I thought as they didn’t clap any handcuffs on me , I obviously wasn’t their target. One of them speaks good English as he is married to a girl from “up north ” he met during the year he spent working with the men in blue near Blackpool ( I think anyway north of Watford ) “I’m looking for Susan the owner that car ” ( I noticed one of the giters car had returned without the driver so he had driven it back. Had he been arrested ? ) ” Try that gite “”allo Susan ” ” No I’m not Susan ” I crinched ” Sorry wrong gite try that one over there “We found Susan just sat down relaxing with a coffee on the patio when she was confronted with two gendarmes with their full kit ,pistols, French truncheon and a few other riot control toys, really necessary in Plestin. The poor woman nearly had a heart attack.”Don’t vorry your usband as a liettle accident “What had happened was he had just been to the tabac in town and was walking to the boulangerie when a passing lorry slowing down for the traffic lights rear door opened and whacked him on the shoulder leaving him lying on the pavement. Fortunately for him a nurse was in the following car so she called all the services and he was taken to Urgence at L Lannion where he was treated for the bruising ( nothing broken ) I blame myself I shouldn’t have told him the night before about the attractive nurses in A and E!
